Silent animations

Silent animations unlike silent films use music and sounds to help guide the narrative. Like in the animation Rain Town by Masafumi Komatsu, the music score is solemn and combined with the sound of the rain and other sound creates a moving animations about loneliness, loss and friendship. Again like other wordless media a lot is communicated by gesture and body language. I also find the use of colour in this animation feeds the narrative as she is so bright but everything else is so empty and dull coloured. So using colour as symbolism could help me show the narrative.

Rain Town

I also looked at other indie animations that used the same kind of way to show the narrative in a wordless animation.

Red
Disney has also recently released a wordless animation called Paperman. The main defining thing about Paperman is that the whole animation is in grey scale except for the woman's red lips, this is because the kiss mark on the paper is important for the narrative. Using colour the point out important parts of the narrative is a cleaver way to make you focus without giving it to much thought. Again the music score and sound effect help you believe the world the animation is set in and also shows how the main character feels. The style this animation is drawn in the artist has enhanced the eye size as the eyes are a good way to show emotion especially because that has to be done through expression rather than words.

- Wreck-it Ralph, bonus feature Paperman, Disney, DVD 2012, director Rich Moore.

The Illusionist
The illusionist is an animated film directed by Sylvain Chomet, its a British French animation about an illusionist who's job as a magician is becoming a dying art. Until he meets a young woman who believes his magic is real, this is a very emotional film with minimal speech in it. Though this film does contain some speech a lot of the actual narrative and communication between to two main characters is shown through gesture and sounds.
