Silent films

To look further into silent films I decided that I would look at one I knew nothing about and had never watched before, the film being A trip to the moon directed by George Meilies in 1902. Its a French black and white film about space travel. I found this film used very exaggerated gesture to communicate what was actually happening as its completely silent not even using title cards, but I also noticed that to show passage of time they would change set to help progress the narrative. I found this film very surreal and think this is why I found it interesting to watch as if it was on a boring topic I would have grown board and probably stopped watching it, making the topic of space travel so comical and surreal would make this appeal to a large range of people and means that the words are not really missed because its so odd. Another thing I noticed was how busy the set constantly was it was always full of life and excitement.
I think this film works well as a wordless narrative because it intrigues you by making such a normal topic so surreal and this keeps you hooked as you want to know what happens next.
